What to eat after root canal treatment is very important to understand so that you do not disturb or damage the crown. Patients naturally struggle to choose the right meals and snacks to eat after a root canal.

There are a variety of healthy options you can choose from to replace those foods you consider your favourite but aren’t recommended to eat straight away after treatment.

There are certain foods that you’re recommended to avoid so that you don’t experience any unnecessary pain. The crown can also get damaged, which would lead to paying for replacements and possibly needing additional dental treatments.

So, let’s drive-through and determine what to eat after root canal treatment.

Eat Softer Foods

Softer foods after root canal treatment will ensure the crown isn’t irritated and that your mouth can recover quickly. Of course, you can eat after root canal treatment, however, it is recommended that you let the anesthetic wear off, otherwise you won’t feel any sensation in the mouth when you eat.

Here are some of the softer food choices you can enjoy:

  • Boiled or mashed potatoes
  • Pasta, noodles, and quinoa
  • Scrambled eggs
  • Dairy products such as yoghurt and grated cheese
  • Cooked vegetables as a meal or on their own
  • Vegetable soup
  • Oatmeal
  • Canned fish (Sardines, Tuna)

Avoid These Foods…

Unfortunately, some of the below foods will likely be some of your favourites. Although, whilst it is not out of the question to not have any of these foods for the duration of the root canal, hold off on these foods for the short term.

  • Crunchy foods such as carrots, peppers, and corn
  • Chewy foods such as candy, gum and taffy as these foods can get stuck on the crown
  • Hard foods such as dry nuts and ice
  • Spicy foods
  • Sugary drinks and alcohol
  • Avoid overly hot and cold drinks as this can cause temporary sensitivity in the mouth

How Else Can I Look After My Root Canal?

Once you have had the symptoms of root canal and you are done with the treatment, now is the time when aftercare becomes equally important to reap the benefits of the treatment.

Ensure that you brush and floss your teeth twice a day. Be gentle around the sensitive area, including when you floss so that you avoid disturbing the root canal.

Consult your dentist if you feel regular sensitivity, or still have any questions on what to eat after the root canal. It is natural to feel the sensation a few days post-treatment. Although, consider taking over-the-counter medication or drinking lukewarm water with salt to reduce it. If it persists, contact the dentist for a professional second opinion.
